The Open Water Lifeguard Course (OWL)

The Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) designed the Open Water Lifeguard (OWL) Qualification to meet the demands of open water lifeguards and the evolving needs of open water operators. With the expanding open water industry, the academy is committed to adapting by continually enhancing this training in line with the RLSS.  The OWL certification enables individuals to oversee and offer rescue support for carefully planned, organised, and risk-assessed activities in calm, non-tidal water environments.

Open Water Lifeguar'd prerequisites

Every candidate attending a OWL course must:

  • Be 16-years-old or over at the time of assessment
  • Be competent and confident in open water
  • Be able to submerge under the water confidently
  • Before the course, candidates must be able to swim at least 400 metres in a pool/ open water swimming continuously on their front and show urgency.

Current NPLQ holders can use RPL* from their NPLQ and attend a one-day RPL OWL qualification course, which will include an assessment by an OWL Assessor if successful they will be awarded an OWL qualification valid for 2 years.

RPL New candidates: 7hrs + Assessment

Our Coaches

James and David, the trainers and assessors at Ocean Frog Lifesaving Academy, boast an impressive 50 years of combined lifesaving experience. Their industry-leading standards ensure excellence in training. Despite the physical demands of the OWL course, James and David prioritise an instructional approach that not only equips each candidate with the essential information for success but also fosters an enjoyable learning experience.

Whats in the training for the OWL

The OWL offers individuals without prior lifeguard experience the opportunity to qualify. Upon obtaining this certification, candidates are deemed competent to provide supervision and rescue coverage for planned, organized, and risk-assessed activities in still, non-tidal open water. This three-day Open Water Lifeguard Qualification, valid for two years, undergoes independent assessment. The training, divided into three sections, covers the lifeguard's role, environment, hazards, and supervision (Section 1), emergency response and action (Section 2), as well as CPR and First Aid (Section 3), facilitated by the candidate manual and trainer resources.
